Q&A with Steve Blahovec
Next up on the North River Wealth Q&A session: Steve Blahovec. Enjoy.
What's the most rewarding part of your job?
I love meeting new people and building relationships with our clients. It’s always great to hear people’s story and do what we can to be a small piece of their journey.
If you could offer one piece of advice to someone just starting their financial journey, what would it be?
Start saving and investing early in your career. When you develop good habits, it will help set you up for success later in life.
If you could share one piece of wisdom about money and happiness, what would it be?
Be generous. I don’t mean that you shouldn’t enjoy yourself, but when you can use what you have to impact others, no matter how much or how little, it can change your life too.
What's a financial mistake you've made in the past that taught you a valuable lesson?
I was in grad school when the financial crisis happened. Our company was paying for school so I took out loans and invested the money in the stock market. Did it work out? Yes, but I would not recommend this to anyone! Lucky timing.
Favorite Ice Cream Flavor?
Double Dunker from Turkey Hill. Mind. Blown.
What is your favorite part about being a dad?
There are so many things! But when one of the kids accomplishes something on their own and you see their amazing smile, there is nothing like it.
What is one thing you don’t mind spending money on?
Besides family trips? Golf.
How do you balance work and personal life?
The lines are incredibly blurred for when I’m working and when I’m not. But, I try to schedule my work around my family schedule. A huge reason we started our firm was to get out of corporate America and focus on things that really matter.
If you could travel anywhere in the world purely for leisure, where would you go and why?
I love Aruba and Hawaii – it is impossible to have a bad time when you are there.
What's a hidden talent or hobby of yours that might surprise your clients?
Not many hidden talents here! One thing that usually surprises people is that I’ve been teaching elementary school students at our church for about the last 8 years. It has been incredibly rewarding for me.
